Vulcan City Dental is an independently owned general dentistry practice at the crossroads of Birmingham, Crestline, Mountain Brook, Irondale, and Crestwood — founded in 2025 by Dr. Michael MacWilliam and Dr. Caitlin Grimes.
After a decade of practicing inside corporate dental environments, they made a deliberate choice: to build something different from the ground up. Not a better version of what already existed. A replacement for it.

Dr. Michael MacWilliam or "Dr. Mac" is a dedicated and compassionate dentist committed to providing exceptional care to every patient he serves. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry after completing his Bachelor of Science at the University of Alabama. To further refine his skills, Dr. MacWilliam completed an intensive General Practice Residency in Bessemer, Alabama, where he focused on advanced restorative and surgical dentistry, served underserved communities, and managed complex restorative cases. Dr. MacWilliam's favorite part of dentistry is transforming smiles and enhancing his patients' quality of life. He believes that careful planning, open communication, and a deep understanding of each patient's unique goals are essential to achieving exceptional, lasting results. In addition to his extensive training, Dr. MacWilliam has pursued advanced education in dental implantology and prosthetics, allowing him to offer a wide range of personalized treatment options. Outside the office, Dr. MacWilliam is an avid traveler who has explored more than 30 countries, many with his wife – Dr. Caitlin Grimes. A true outdoor enthusiast, he enjoys skiing, hiking, mountain biking, golf, and embracing any opportunity to spend time in nature. Dr. MacWilliam is committed to delivering comprehensive, cutting-edge dental care that helps patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles while ensuring their comfort and confidence every step of the way.
Dr. Caitlin grew up in Palmetto, FL, with her parents and three siblings. They are a true University of Florida family—Go Gators!—with all six members proudly holding UF degrees. After graduating from college, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, seeking a change of scenery and an exceptional dental education. She earned her dental degree in 2014 and then moved to Birmingham, AL, to complete a General Practice Residency, where she expanded her knowledge of general dentistry and gained experience with more advanced dental procedures. It was during this time that she met her husband, Michael MacWilliam. Over the past 11 years in practice, Dr. Caitlin has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education, focusing on Cosmetic Dentistry, Invisalign, and Temporomandibular Pain. She is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Alabama Dental Association, the Birmingham Dental Association, and the American Academy of Clear Aligners. Dr. Caitlin is dedicated to providing high-quality dental care delivered with warmth, attentiveness, and compassion. Outside the office, she loves being outdoors, traveling, and experiencing new places and cultures. One of her bucket-list goals is to visit all 63 U.S. National Parks.
